We roast all of our coffee to-order in micro-batches to ensure that our customers always receive coffee that is consistently fresh, aromatic, and delicious. All of our coffees are certified USDA Organic, high altitude, shade grown, specialty-grade Arabica. And, all but one of our coffees is Fair Trade or Rainforest Alliance certified (we are presently assessing this coffee to determine if their sustainability practices fit our model). We also offer Smithsonian Bird Friendly coffees.
Sweetwater is a member of Cooperative Coffees, the world’s only Fair Trade, organic green coffee purchasing collective, which is based in Americus, Georgia. Together with 23 other roasters from the frosty Yukon down to sunny Gainesville, Sweetwater works directly with small-scale coffee farmer cooperatives to bring some of the world’s best, fairly traded coffee to coffee-loving consumers here in the United States and Canada. Sweetwater’s Rainforest Alliance certified coffees come from some of the world’s most ethical estates whose land-use and business practices conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods. Sweetwater is committed to realizing the message of sustainability by roasting truly extraordinary coffee that does justice to our hard-working trading partners and Mother Nature… from crop to cup.

Currently, my day job is Environmental Protection Director for Alachua County. Including my first time here as a UF student, I’ve moved to Gainesville three times, with periods in between in Knoxville, Tennessee and Raleigh, North Carolina. My wife Suzanne and I raised our two sons in Gainesville, both who are now at college (UF and Middlebury College, VT). I’ve had a long time personal and professional involvement in environmental and sustainability issues. Previously, I was actively involved in local energy conservation issues and food co-ops in Knoxville and Raleigh. This year, I’ve resumed my passion for sea kayaking, after a long hiatus while serving more as a soccer dad.
I’m excited about Sustainable Alachua County’s current support for local foods and energy conservation initiatives. It seems like a lot of the hopes and dreams many of us have long held about making this a more sustainable place are really starting to take off.
