Sustainable Alachua County (SAC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to organizing education and action to promote a deeper, healthier, more resilient community in Alachua County.
Our county contains a wide variety of groups seeking to improve different aspects of the community. Whether they concentrate on improving the food we eat, reducing the energy we consume, or preserving the natural environment, these groups are doing good work. Rather than try to consolidate or centralize these groups, SAC strives to provide a place where these groups – and groups yet to be created – can come together and organize their own efforts in the most efficient way possible.
Guiding Principles
- A vibrant local community is the best way to secure the health and well-being of the people in Alachua County, even during hard times.
- We can never stop learning, or looking for better ways to continue improving our community.
- To paraphrase Aristotle, we must learn by doing.
Goals
Our over-arching goal is to coordinate efforts to improve our community by providing the following infrastructure to local sustainably-minded groups:
- channels of communication
- best practices and startup help for new groups
- cross-pollination of ideas
- coordinated funding opportunities
- research and information on the needs and current health of the community
- educational venues for the public
- coordinated public access for groups
Our History
Established in November, 1996, Sustainable Alachua County has been educating and promoting issues of sustainable living in our community for over a decade.
Warren Neilsen was SAC’s first president. Over the years, SAC’s board members have been community leaders in business, development, real estate, government, and the environment.
In 2009, SAC emerged from a period of dormancy with renewed vigor, refocusing our attention to find the best ways we can promote healthy community in Alachua County.
